I wrote about the whole journey in depth in this story. We drove alongside running pronghorn in Emery County, Utah, teetered on the edge of Black Canyon in Montrose County, Colo., slept beneath the Milky Way and marveled at rainbows from roadsides and dinner tables. Over the course of 12 days, we were able to visit nearly a dozen parks, drive 3,350 miles, take thousands of photos and devour a shameful amount of roadside hamburgers. (One cost-saving tip: The America the Beautiful National Park Pass lets you visit 2,000 sites nationally, including all the ones on our route, for $80.) This past summer, after booking tickets to see Big Thief at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, my partner, Reanna, and I decided to configure our own version of the Grand Circle road trip, expanding it to include a few extra parks in Colorado and a stop at Joshua Tree on the way home to L.A. Regardless, the route - traditionally centered around Utah’s five national parks and the Grand Canyon - is a time-efficient way to see the Southwest’s most iconic natural wonders. Some say it was inspired by an itinerary that Utah Parks Company offered in the 1900s, while others consider it a successful national park marketing campaign that brought an influx of tourists to the Colorado Plateau. I do hope they improve because the menu at least looks like it could be good. The genesis of the Grand Circle road trip isn’t totally clear. Maybe if they'd been busy some of this could've been understandable, but the place wasn't even busy. I paid for me two drinks and left-no more shenanigans. when it returned, the elements that were supposed to have been cold (daikon-supposed to have provided a cool refreshing contrast to the hot fatty meat) were heated as well (imagine if someone served you hot greens-no, salads are served cold here). so the bar tender snatched the plate from my hands (not good-I'm a bad guy now because they're not up to snuff) and took it back for them to heat it up. which wasn't even hot (temperature wise) when it arrived. It took the entire team about half an hour to produce a single "street taco". Didn't find a drink I was interested in having, so I ended up ordering some kind of "fruit sour"-I'd specifically asked for something "not bitter", because I did not like "bitter" drinks, and this very much "bitter" fermented grapefruit based canned drink was recommended to me as "not bitter". glass (grease and food particulate on it that I chipped away with my fingernail to make sure it wasn't just a scratch-MAJOR oversight, disgusting, and offensive).Ģ. First impressions : they served water to me in a dirty. Also, the silverware, from what little I saw of it, seemed to have been clean.ġ. Moreīefore I mention the experience, I did enjoy the decaf cappuccino. Needless to say the atmosphere of the Annex had lost its appeal since we felt as if we were not welcomed from the front of the house with their lack of hospitality. After waiting yet another ten minutes with no word on being seated and yet another group who walked up and were seated immediately I had to go back up again and ask a different host about getting a seat. After the hostess seated the group of girls and I asked how much longer she told me she had “f***** up” and was going to come back with a solution. Again, we had been waiting for 45 minutes and not once the host talked to us about how much longer to be seated. Our 15 minute wait quickly turned into a 45 minute wait and as I waited to ask the hostess how much longer she proceeded to seat a group of girls that had just arrived immediately. we were more of a bother or rather an inconvenience to the hosts than an actual customer. Unfortunately our evening at the Annex was quite the opposite. We had spent an amazing dinner at Tinderbox the night before and anticipated enjoying another evening at the Annex. My husband and I had a fantastic time exploring Flagstaff this week.
